The NDA officially named CP Radhakrishnan, the sitting Governor of Maharashtra, as their candidate for the Vice President of India, with the election scheduled for September 9, 2025. This move comes weeks after the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down citing health reasons.
The NDA leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president JP Nadda, praised Radhakrishnan’s extensive political and administrative experience. They expressed hope for a consensus with the opposition to ensure an uncontested election but preparations continue in case of a contest.
The opposition alliance has yet to announce its nominee, signalling a potentially competitive election ahead.
NDA’s Choice and Official Endorsements
The decision to nominate CP Radhakrishnan was confirmed during the NDA Parliamentary Board meeting. BJP President JP Nadda announced the unanimous support within the alliance for Radhakrishnan’s candidacy. Nadda highlighted that the alliance would reach out to opposition parties to explore the possibility of a consensus candidate, thereby avoiding a political contest.
Radhakrishnan’s nomination was praised for his integrity, humility, and proven public service record. He has served as Governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra and was a two-term member of the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded his grassroots engagement, emphasizing his work in empowering marginalized communities and fostering regional development. Radhakrishnan himself expressed gratitude and underscored his commitment to serve the nation with dignity and dedication if elected.
The Political Backdrop and Significance of the Role
The Vice President’s post became vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned abruptly in July 2025, citing personal health reasons. This unexpected vacancy catalysed a political process to elect a successor who will also serve as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, where impartiality and diplomatic skill are crucial.
CP Radhakrishnan’s candidature is considered a strategic choice by the NDA, reflecting not only his administrative experience but also his political loyalty and deep roots in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, important in the upcoming electoral challenges faced by the alliance.
His prior gubernatorial roles have been marked by efforts to maintain harmony and respect democratic principles, qualities needed in a Vice President. The opposition yet to name a candidate leaves uncertainty about whether this election will be contested or settled by consensus.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The Logical Indian views the nomination of CP Radhakrishnan through the lens of India’s broader democratic ideals. The Vice President’s office is not simply a political prize but a custodial role that requires balancing divergent voices in Parliament impartially and respectfully.
In times of heightened political polarisation, it is imperative that the Vice President embody neutrality, inclusivity, and respect for democratic discourse. While experience and loyalty are important, these must harmonise with the deeper values of empathy, dialogue, and coexistence.
The Logical Indian encourages all political stakeholders to elevate the office beyond partisan interests and work towards fostering an environment of constructive dialogue and national unity.
