Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 11, 2025, urgently highlighting the ongoing Russian invasion, including the recent shelling of a civilian bus station in Zaporizhzhia that injured dozens. Zelenskyy urged India to actively support peaceful resolutions and insisted that all decisions regarding Ukraine’s future must include Ukrainian participation.

The leaders also discussed the need for global sanctions, notably on Russian energy exports, and confirmed a planned in-person meeting during the UN General Assembly in September. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s consistent call for an early and peaceful resolution to the conflict, while pledging continued diplomatic and practical support.

Recent Attacks and Zelenskyy’s Appeal to India

In the detailed phone call, President Zelenskyy painted a vivid picture of the intensifying conflict in July 2025, noting that Russian forces had launched over 5,100 guided aerial bombs, nearly 3,800 drone strikes by “shaheds,” and close to 260 missiles, among them 128 ballistic missiles.

A particularly grievous attack targeted a bus station in Zaporizhzhia, wounding dozens of civilians, which Zelenskyy described as a deliberate move to terrorise urban areas amid diplomatic talks. He stressed that any peace process must be “inclusive,” with Ukraine fully involved, warning that decisions without Ukrainian consent would fail to secure lasting peace. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for India’s warm support and pressed for global efforts to restrict Russian oil exports, curbing Russia’s war financing capabilities.

“Glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his perspectives on recent developments. I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

India’s Balanced Diplomatic Stance and Ongoing Cooperation

India has maintained a cautious and balanced diplomatic posture regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, consistently urging political dialogue and peaceful resolution involving all stakeholders. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to a peaceful settlement early in the conversation and assured Ukraine of India’s support for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This dialogue comes shortly after Modi’s call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and ahead of a crucial summit between Presidents Trump and Putin, where the conflict will be a central focus. Both leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation, reflecting deepening India-Ukraine relations and a shared interest in stability and peace. Their joint agreement to meet at the UN General Assembly in September aims to further this dialogue.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The ongoing Ukraine conflict starkly underscores the global imperative for peace anchored in respect for sovereignty, dialogue, and inclusive diplomacy. The Logical Indian advocates for international engagement that upholds Ukraine’s right to self-determination and calls on all involved parties to commit genuinely to de-escalation and diplomatic solutions.

India’s steady, balanced approach exemplifies the potential for middle powers to mediate and foster peaceful outcomes in complex geopolitical crises.
