In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the nation, a 35-year-old man from Kheda district in Gujarat allegedly murdered his 7-year-old daughter by pushing her into a canal—because he wanted a son. The incident occurred on July 10, 2025, and was initially reported as an accident.
However, the truth unfolded days later after the man’s wife, under emotional stress and family pressure, bravely revealed that her husband deliberately killed their child. The man, Vijay Solanki, has been arrested and charged with murder, criminal intimidation, and domestic violence. Authorities condemned the act, attributing it to deep-rooted gender bias and societal pressure for a male child.
‘Showed Her Fish, Then Pushed Her In’: A Tragic Betrayal by Her Own Father
The alleged crime unfolded in Chelavat village, located near Thasra in the Kheda district of Gujarat. On Guru Purnima, July 10, Vijay Solanki took his wife and two young daughters on a family outing to a temple.
While returning home, he allegedly halted the trip on a bridge over the Narmada canal, telling his 7-year-old daughter Bhoomika he wanted to show her fish in the canal below. According to the heart-breaking account given by the mother, Anjana Solanki, “He made her stand near the railing. I thought he was just showing her the water. Suddenly, he pushed her in. Before I could react, she was gone. I was in shock and helpless.”
Initially coerced into silence, Anjana said her husband threatened her with divorce and warned her not to share the truth. Bhoomika’s death was presented to relatives and police as an unfortunate drowning accident. The child’s body was recovered the next day, and last rites were performed before any suspicion was raised.
Truth Unveiled After Police Probe, Family Pressure
Anjana’s family, suspicious of Solanki’s behaviour and aware of his desire for a son, repeatedly insisted on a deeper police inquiry. It was later discovered that Solanki often blamed Anjana for not giving birth to a male child, frequently belittling her and showing dissatisfaction after the birth of their second daughter. Disturbed by the inconsistencies, Thasra police re-evaluated the mother’s statement.
With the support of her family and after repeated questioning, Anjana finally revealed the truth: her husband had deliberately killed Bhoomika. During interrogation, Solanki confessed, stating chillingly: “I killed her because she was not a boy. I had enough of daughters. I wanted a son.”
Kheda District Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhiya confirmed the arrest. “We found no ritualistic angle in the murder. It was purely linked to gender-based prejudice and frustration,” he told reporters. A case has officially been registered under sections 302 (murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 498A (domestic violence) of the Indian Penal Code.
