A severe cloudburst struck near Mukh village, close to Nandprayag Ghat in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday morning, resulting in landslides and flash flooding that damaged property but, fortunately, caused no loss of life. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) promptly dispatched teams to the site to assess and assist the affected population.
Villagers reported the destruction of two cow sheds and have demanded compensation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Uttarakhand on Sunday, warning of sustained intense rains and heightened landslide risks across multiple districts over the coming days.
Cloudburst Impact
The intense cloudburst led to sudden, heavy downpour that overwhelmed the local drainage and caused flash floods near Mukh village. Landslides along the Nandprayag-Ghat road temporarily disrupted connectivity, complicating rescue and relief operations.
Villagers described the event as unprecedented in recent memory, with floodwaters washing away two cow sheds and damaging agricultural land.
Monsoon Warnings and Regional Preparedness Measures
The IMD’s heavy rainfall alert, issued on Sunday, forecasts continued intense precipitation across Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Tehri, Bageshwar, Dehradun, Rudraprayag, and surrounding districts until at least Friday. These conditions increase the risk of further landslides, flash floods, and infrastructure damage in the fragile Himalayan terrain.
Authorities have heightened vigilance, with the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) coordinating with district officials to monitor river levels and road conditions. Recent rains have already caused damage to critical infrastructure, including the partial collapse of a bridge near Ojri on the Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi district.
Despite the increased water flow in rivers such as the Alaknanda, officials report that water levels remain below danger thresholds, though continuous monitoring is underway.
