On June 14, 2025, just 38 hours after the fatal Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad, Air India flight AI-187, a Boeing 777 flying from Delhi to Vienna, suddenly dropped nearly 900 feet shortly after takeoff amid severe weather conditions. The incident triggered multiple cockpit warnings, including stall alerts and repeated “Don’t sink” ground proximity warnings.

Despite the alarming situation, the pilots quickly stabilised the aircraft, and the flight safely completed its nine-hour journey. Both pilots have been grounded pending a detailed investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which has also summoned Air India’s Head of Safety for questioning.

Mid-Air Emergency Managed Amid Turbulence

Flight AI-187 departed Indira Gandhi International Airport at 2:56 am and soon encountered severe thunderstorms over Delhi. The aircraft’s flight data recorder revealed the activation of critical stall warnings and Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) alerts, including multiple “Don’t sink” cautions indicating an imminent risk of aerodynamic stall and ground collision.

The plane lost approximately 900 feet of altitude during its climb. According to an Air India spokesperson, the crew responded swiftly and effectively to regain control, ensuring passenger safety throughout the remainder of the flight. The airline promptly reported the incident to the DGCA in compliance with regulations.

Heightened Scrutiny Following Ahmedabad Crash

This incident has intensified scrutiny of Air India’s safety protocols, coming just days after the catastrophic AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad that claimed over 260 lives. A recent DGCA audit had already flagged multiple maintenance lapses and delayed defect rectifications in Air India’s fleet, raising concerns about operational discipline.

The DGCA has launched a formal probe into the AI-187 incident, grounding the pilots involved and summoning the airline’s Head of Safety to explain potential lapses. Aviation experts and passengers alike are closely monitoring the investigation, which could lead to stricter oversight and enhanced safety measures.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The near-disastrous altitude loss experienced by Air India’s Delhi-Vienna flight highlights the critical importance of uncompromising safety standards and rigorous regulatory oversight in civil aviation. While the pilots’ skill averted tragedy this time, systemic issues flagged by regulators demand urgent attention and reform.

The Logical Indian calls on Air India and aviation authorities to prioritise transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement to rebuild public trust.
