A fourth arrest has been made in the alleged Kolkata law student gang-rape case, with West Bengal Police detaining Pinaki Banerjee, the 55-year-old security guard of South Calcutta Law College, on Saturday. Banerjee was allegedly present near the guard’s room during the assault on June 25 but failed to intervene or alert authorities.
Three others—Monojit Mishra, a former student leader, and current students Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed, were earlier arrested for their alleged involvement in the crime. The incident, which allegedly took place inside the college campus, has sparked widespread outrage, political debate, and renewed questions about campus safety in West Bengal.
Security Guard’s Alleged Role and Police Action
According to police, CCTV footage and witness accounts confirmed Banerjee’s alleged presence outside the guard’s room while the crime occurred. Investigators allege he was made to leave the room by the accused and ignored the survivor’s repeated pleas for help, allegedly failing to notify college authorities or the police.
“His negligence was established during questioning, following which he was placed under arrest,” said a senior police officer. The 24-year-old survivor was allegedly assaulted for several hours, and her medical examination confirmed evidence of force. The main gate of the college was reportedly locked during the incident, further isolating the victim.
Case Background and Political Fallout
The survivor, a first-year law student and reportedly the women’s wing secretary of the student body, was allegedly lured to the campus to fill out exam forms and promised a key union post. After allegedly rejecting a marriage proposal from Mishra, she was dragged to the guard’s room and assaulted, with two others allegedly standing by.
The accused allegedly recorded videos to threaten her and used physical violence when she resisted. The case has triggered a political storm, with opposition leaders criticising the state government’s handling of campus safety and law and order6. Senior police officials, including the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime & Traffic), have visited the college, and the investigation continues with all four accused in custody.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The Logical Indian condemns this horrific and allegedly premeditated assault, as well as the alleged failure of those in positions of responsibility to protect a vulnerable student.
This case underscores the urgent need for robust campus safety protocols, accountability, and a culture that empowers bystanders to act. Every student deserves to feel safe within educational institutions, and it is imperative that authorities ensure justice and systemic change.
