A 24-year-old female law student was allegedly gang-raped inside South Calcutta Law College, Kolkata, on the evening of June 25, 2025. Police arrested three men Manojit Mishra (a staff member and former student leader), Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (both current students) after the survivor filed a detailed complaint.

The incident, which reportedly took place in the security guard’s room after college hours, has led to a swift police investigation, with all accused remanded to custody and the crime scene secured for forensic analysis. The case has triggered widespread outrage, renewed debate on campus safety, and political sparring in West Bengal.

Incident Details and Police Investigation

According to the official FIR and police sources, the survivor had visited the college to complete examination-related formalities. She was allegedly lured to a secluded part of the campus by Manojit Mishra, who ordered the college gate locked before the assault.

The attack reportedly occurred in the security guard’s room, with the other two accused present and allegedly abetting the crime. The survivor managed to escape and immediately informed her family, who accompanied her to the Kasba police station to lodge a complaint. Police conducted a medical examination at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, collected CCTV footage, and seized the accused’s mobile phones for digital evidence.

The accused were arrested from different locations in Kolkata within hours of the complaint. “We are treating this case with utmost seriousness. All standard protocols are being followed, and a special team is handling the investigation,” said a senior Kolkata Police official. The accused have been produced before the Alipore court and remanded to police custody for further interrogation.

Political Fallout and Demands for Accountability

The incident has reignited fierce debate over women’s safety and the culture of impunity on educational campuses in West Bengal. Political leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of failing to protect students, especially as Manojit Mishra is reportedly a former leader of the TMC’s student wing.

Amit Malviya, BJP IT cell chief, stated, “This is not an isolated incident. It reflects a pattern of lawlessness and disregard for women’s safety in Bengal’s educational institutions.”

Student organisations and women’s rights groups have staged protests outside the college, demanding the immediate suspension of the accused, enhanced security measures, and a public statement from the college administration.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo motu cognisance of the case and sought a detailed report from the state police.

Campus Safety Under Scrutiny and Calls for Reform

This latest incident comes in the wake of a similar case at RG Kar Medical College earlier this year, which sparked widespread protests and led to the formation of a judicial inquiry committee. Many students and faculty members now question the adequacy of existing safety protocols on campuses across Kolkata.

“We need more than just CCTV cameras and security guards. There must be a culture of respect, accountability, and zero tolerance for harassment,” said a student leader from Jadavpur University. Experts have called for comprehensive reforms, including sensitisation workshops, anonymous reporting mechanisms, and regular safety audits.

The college administration, while yet to release a detailed statement, has reportedly begun an internal review and pledged full cooperation with the police investigation.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This deeply distressing case is a stark reminder of the urgent need for systemic change to ensure the safety and dignity of all students. The Logical Indian stands in unwavering solidarity with the survivor and all those demanding justice and accountability.

We urge authorities, educational institutions, and society at large to move beyond reactive outrage and commit to proactive, meaningful reforms be it through policy changes, awareness drives, or community engagement. How can we collectively build campuses where every student feels safe, respected, and empowered to speak out against injustice?
