Floods Kill 31 In Assam, 37 Lakh People In 2,266 Villages Of 21 Districts Affected

Deadly floods ravage Assam Death toll rises to 31 as flood situation in Assam remains critical. Nearly 37 lakh people in 2,266 villages of 21 districts have been affected across the state. The affected districts of the state are Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Darrang, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, Dibrugarh, Biswanath, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, Kamrup, South Kamrup and Karbi Anglong.

Massive Infrastructure destruction The worst-hit districts are Morigaon with 3.5 lakh people affected, followed by Darrang with 1.4 lakh people affected and Goalpara with around 1.38 lakh people affected. 463 relief camps and distribution camps by the authorities are being run in the state that are giving shelter to more than 1.5 lakh people. The floods have so far destroyed over 42,000 houses and about 1.5 lakh hectares of crop area are still submerged under the flood waters. According to the reports of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), bridges and other infrastructure have been washed away.

Affecting the entire ecosystem In places like Jorhat, Golpara and Dhurbi, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark. Bad news are also pouring from Kaziranga National Park, where 200 wild animals have drowned to death. 13 rhino carcasses have been recovered by the Divisional Forest Officer. 152 hog deer also died in the flood. The flood situation is not only restricted to Assam, heavy rains have aggravated the situation in Meghalaya, Bihar and West Bengal as well.
