Subhangi Swaroop became the first woman pilot in the Indian Navy on 22 November to take charge. She is a cadet from UP at the panoramic INA campus.
Wednesday also saw the first batch of female officers at the Naval Armament Inspection (NAI) branch, which was considered to be an area of male dominance till now.
These women pilots were inducted into the force at an impressive passing out ceremony in the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, in Kannur. As many as 328 cadets of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and two overseas cadets, one each from Tanzania and Maldives, passed out on successful completion of their courses in the same ceremony.
Subhangi Swaroop, who is now due to undergo training pilot training at Dundigal Air Force Academy in Hyderabad, was overjoyed at her achievement. She said, “I know, this is not just an exciting opportunity but a great responsibility also.”
Aastha Segal, Roopa A and Sakthimaya S, who have been inducted into the NAI branch claimed that this was a moment of great recognition for women in India. As more and more women show keenness to join the armed forces, such incidents tend to inspire them.
According to Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sunil Lanba, who reviewed the passing out parade, the Indian Navy started inducting female officers since 1991, but the areas of induction have now been expanded.
The professional training at the INA has been designed to instil discipline, professionalism, courage and camaraderie among the young officers.
After the ceremonial review, medals were awarded to nine meritorious midshipmen and cadets by Admiral Lanba.
