Delhi police personnel ended their nearly 11-hour long protest after assurance from senior officers that their grievances would be addressed.
Thousands of police personnel staged a protest outside the Police Headquarters on Tuesday, November 5, demanding action against a group of lawyers in a clash with their colleague outside the Saket court on Saturday, November 2. The protests were triggered by two attacks on their colleagues, one on Monday and another on Saturday, after a parking dispute between an on-duty policeman and a lawyer led to at least 20 security personnel and several advocates being injured.

Addressing the protesters, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satish Golcha urged them to resume duty, while assuring them that a review petition would be filed against the Delhi High Court order in connection to the incident. He also said the injured policemen will get an ex-gratia of at least Rs 25,000 each.

“Kiran Bedi Lao, Delhi Police Bachao”
With loud chants of “Kiran Bedi lao, Delhi Police bachao”, protesting Delhi Police personnel on Tuesday remembered the former IPS officer as they gathered to raise their voices against the atrocities on the police force.

In an incident on February 17, 1988, at Tis Hazari Court Complex, Kiran Bedi backed the force and had a face-off with lawyers who were protesting the handcuffing of an advocate on suspicion of theft. Whereas, on Tuesday, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik was booed by constables after he asked them to call off the protest.
“Never drive men and women in uniform up the wall,” said Kiran Bedi, the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and former IPS officer, reacting to the unprecedented protests. She urged Delhi Police “to take a stand and be firm on it come what may”.
Congress Lashes Out At BJP
Police protesting on roads in Delhi is a “new low” for India since Independence and shows Home Minister Amit Shah’s “failure of leadership”, the Congress said on Tuesday, alleging law and order has collapsed in the national capital.
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala claimed that this is the first time such an atmosphere is prevailing in the country where the Delhi Police has gheraoed the Police Headquarters. Law and order have collapsed in Delhi, he said, asking why Shah was in “hibernation” and not addressing the matter.

“Is this the new India that the BJP promised. When will this matter end,” he asked, adding that “a studied and conspiratorial silence will not work” and the home minister cannot hide.
Police personnel have been protesting for over 10 hours outside the headquarters and their family members at India Gate, but the home minister remains “silent”, the Congress leader said.

“On one side, lawyers are being shot at and beaten up and on the other, police is being beaten up,” he said.
