Delhi Metro To Allow Lighters & Matchboxes; Women Can Carry Small Knives Too

Supported by

Objects like knives, swords, guns, firearms, explosive materials, and dangerous chemicals were among the 54 items restricted inside the Delhi metro. However, from now onwards, lighters and matchboxes are off the restricted list and women will be allowed to carry small knives.

The decision was taken by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Officials report the seizure of at least 100 lighters and matchboxes everyday in the Delhi Metro. Women can carry a knife up to 4 inches in view of their safety and security.

The Delhi Metro, which began functioning 14 years ago, sees a daily ridership of nearly 2.7 million. It is comprised of 216 trains passing through 160 stations

A CISF official told Hindustan Times, “Apart from one lighter and one matchbox per passenger, we have also allowed passengers to carry tools. We received several requests as labourers travel by metro and carry tools for work … However, we examine the tools and make an entry in a register so that the passenger can be traced if needed.”

However, security personnel can deny entry to any passenger if the passenger is viewed as a security threat. Is it a right decision? Will it help in securing women? Please share your opinion.
