On January 20, a sub-inspector was transferred in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow after a video showing an elderly woman falling at the feet of the said sub-inspector to get an FIR registered went viral.

The sub-inspector was associated with Gudamba Police Station, which ironically was awarded one among the three best police stations in the country by the Intelligence Bureau just last year.

Pleading for FIR to be registered

The 27-second video shows 75-year-old Brahma Devi pleading and then eventually falling at the feet of the said police personnel. In the video, Sub Inspector Tej Prakash Singh can be seen sitting on a chair with absolute indifference.

Reportedly, Brahma Devi’s 20-year-old grandson, Akash Yadav was crushed to death by a machine while he was working at the plywood factory. The relatives of the deceased allege that the police was not taking any action against the owner of the factory, reported News18. They also accused the factory-owner Ajay Gupta for using old machinery, some of which were in dire need of repairment.

Soon after the video went viral, Sub-Inspector Singh was transferred by SSP Kalanidhi Naithani to the police lines. Also, the owner Gupta was booked. No arrests have yet been made as Gupta remains absconding from the day of the incident.

The Logical Indian Take

Last year, the Gudamba Police Station was listed among the three best police stations in the country. The list was prepared by the Intelligence Bureau in collaboration with the Quality Council of India, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The rankings were measured against 80 parameters related to redressal of public grievances, registration of FIRs, maintenance of records and public and police welfare, among others. The police station also received an award from Union Minister Rajnath Singh. The ministry had then said that “extremely courteous” staff was one of the strengths of this police station, as reported by NDTV.

If this is the condition of one of the best police stations in the country. It speaks volume about how apathetic our police is with the citizens who go to them to get FIRs registered. More then the transfer of the officer, what is needed is sensitisation of police officers across India and training on how they should treat citizens.
