The SRM University Chancellor TR Pachamuthu has been arrested by the Chennai Crime Branch police today after they received complaints from over hundreds of parents who had paid capitation fee for medical seats in SRM Medical College.

The complaint was filed after Pachamuthu’s close aide, Kollywood (Tamil) film producer, Madhan, who has worked as an admission agent for the college, went missing on May 27 after collecting several crores from the medical seat aspirants. 109 cheating cases were registered by the Chennai Police and Madhan had collected about Rs 73 crore from the parents. The parents had named Pachamuthu along with Madhan in their complaint.

Madhan’s family alleged that he went missing after paying all the money collected to Pachamuthu.

Students and parents are protesting in front of Pachamuthu’s residence.

According to police sources, Pachamuthu has been arrested under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 34 (common intention).

The Indian Express reported that Madhan allegedly wrote a letter to his friends saying that he was going to attain ‘Samadhi’ in Varanasi before he went missing. He blamed SRM group of institutions in his letter and claimed that he used to work as an admission agent for the SRM group.

Recently, the Madras High Court criticised the police for the delay in tracing the whereabouts of Madhan.

Earlier in 2013, CBI had conducted raids on SRM Group of institutions and Madhan’s production house, Vendhar movies, which had yielded unaccounted cash worth several crores.
