Jayesh Patel, the BJP leader from Gujarat’s Vadodara, has been remanded to eight-day police custody for allegedly raping a nursing student of Parul University at Waghodia, of which he is the president. The allegation also resulted in his suspension from the BJP for six years for “tarnishing the reputation” of the party. The police had launched a search operation to find him after he went underground.

The 22-year-old University student alleged in her complaint to police that Mr Patel, 66, had called her to a housing quarter on the university campus through their hostel rector Bhavna Patel on Friday evening and raped her. Mr Patel allegedly tried to lure the girl by ensuring that she will get good marks in examination and a 100 per cent attendance. When she tried to resist, he raped her. The victim also alleged that Patel threatened to rusticate her from the institute and spoil her career by failing her in exams if she revealed it to anyone, police said.

University status after joining BJP

According to the Indian Express, Post 2014 elections, he had joined the BJP and within two years time, his college got university status and the permission to start a limited MBBS course. He had also been reportedly running an abortion clinic for long where people could walk in and do an abortion at a paltry fee of Rs 150. His university website though calls him a “visionary”.

The Logical Indian congratulates the government for not budging to the powerful and also we request, if proven guilty, the government should push for maximum punishment for Mr. Patel besides ensuring the victim is adequately compensated.
