This morning was another morning filled with a surprise for me – I happened to meet a visually impaired man – Mr. Purshothaman (40) who was walking step by step tapping his walking stick on the ground.

I was on my activa when I approached him asking if I could drop him somewhere? He asked me to leave him to the bus stop from where he would go to his office. I then asked him – where are you going by the way? He said – Income tax office, Nungambakkam, Chennai.

I requested him to sit behind and while we were moving towards the bus stop – our conversation begun. During the conversation, I learnt that Mr. Purshotaman had proper vision till the age of 8 when he developed night blindness – a medical complication.

His parents were treating him for it and during the treatment, he lost complete vision due to improper medicine – he wasn’t being treated by a proper doctor, his parents were treating him in some village down south with what we call in hindi as “Desi Ilaaj”

After becoming blind, he did not lose his will power one bit. He did his schooling after which he did his Bachelor of Arts. In 1997, he appeared for the staff selection examination held in Chennai for the post of a Stenographer where in he would dictate the answers while someone else would write the exams as he was visually impaired.

He proudly mentioned that – out of the hundreds of visually impaired candidates who appeared for that exam, he was the ONLY ONE to clear and secure a job in the INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT from entire TAMILNADU.

Today, he is a successful husband and a father of two school going children – Vaibhav and Anubhav who are completely normal physically His designation, which started as a Stenographer in 1997 is now that of a Personal Secretary to one of the Commissioner’s of the Income Tax Department as on current date

As we moved on, I did not drop him at the bus stand – rather we became friends and went on until his office He was so overwhelmed and he blessed me by stating – so many people have helped me seeing that I’m blind – but no one has dropped me from my starting point to my office

Apparently, he happens to live in the Government income tax quarters near my residence and I have now invited him for lunch with family at a day of his convenience

We exchanged numbers and what I earned is a new friend today who taught me again – NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN LIFE, NEVER LOSE HOPE, NEVER GIVE UP AND WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY.

Lastly he said – “What if I cant see from my eyes, I can see from my heart and what I’m seeing in you is good and that you will go a long way in life” My motive behind this post is to once again cheer all of us and to never feel down, depressed or deprived of anything.

Life is much happier than we think it is – Lets all live and let live. Smile and the world smiles with you!
