A photo showing Bollywood actor Aamir Khan shaking hands with President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is being shared widely on social media platforms with a claim that Khan and Erdoğan met recently in Turkey.

Anant Gandhi claims to be a member of Ahmedabad BJP IT cell. A Former BJP MP, Tarun Vijay, also propagated the claim on Twitter.

Isn’t it true they boycotted meeting #Netanyahu in Mumbai, though #Israel is India’s best, most trusted friend. But travels Turkey to hv this pic , while Erdogan hurts India ,aligns with our enemies and is a dictator to his people. https://t.co/b2MUKiISYr

Here, Vijay refers to the mega event ‘Shalom Bollywood’ which was attended by ‘India’s friend’ the Israeli PM, Benjamin Netanyahu. Khan had not participated in this event.

The photo has gone viral on social media, with netizens criticizing Khan for meeting a person who criticized and opposed India on various occasions ever since the Indian government abrogated Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and voiced his country’s support to Pakistan’s stand on this issue. Erdoğan had made a similar statement in the United Nations last year.

The translated version of the viral post reads, ‘Film actor Aamir Khan went to Turkey to meet its president Erdogan. Turkey’s anti-India stance and love for Pakistan is not hidden from anyone. Shameful.’

The claim is viral on Twitter and Facebook.

Claim:

Aamir Khan recently met Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Turkey.

Fact Check:The claim is false

The viral photo dates back to 2017.

On 7th October 2017, the official twitter account of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey tweeted the photo with the caption ‘President Erdoğan Receives Actor @aamir_khan at the Presidential Complex.’

A report from October 8, 2017, stated that Khan met President Erdoğan to promote his film ‘Secret Superstar’ at the Presidential Complex in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Therefore, we can confirm that Aamir Khan met the Turkish president way back in 2017 with the intention of promoting his movie, which is a fairly common practice amongst the Bollywood fraternity.
