Almost every day we come across videos that spread fake information, are doctored or staged. These videos are usually shared to spread communal hatred or to serve individualistic propagandas. Many people are aware of these videos but most people fall prey to them and without realizing become part of the agenda. Some of these fake videos circulating in social media nowadays are:
Gory video of Rohingyas chopping and selling Hindu meat
A video that was being circulated on social media a few weeks back claimed that it was a video of Rohingya Muslims who are killing Hindus and engaging in cannibalism. The video had gory images of bloodied body parts which were being sold in a market allegedly by Rohingya Muslims. “These are Rohingya Muslims. Look at how they are eating Hindus. And Hindus, you keep crying over the price of petrol,” this was the caption along with the post. Several of these individual Facebook posts have received thousands of shares.
The video has been removed from the internet now. The men in the video can be heard speaking in Hindi, ‘Aaiye aaiye meat lijiye; sasta ho gaya; hazaar rupaiye; lijiye sasta ho gaya’. (Come buy meat, thousand rupees, it has become cheap) The word ‘WhatsApp’ can be heard multiple times in the video.
Rohingyas speak in what is known as the Rohingya dialect which is similar to what is spoken in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Many Rohingya people also speak Burmese, the official language of Myanmar. The video was clearly doctored but it managed to garner a lot of traction and spread communal hatred.
Football vandalism video shared as Kashmiris attacking Muslims
Another video that was viral was being circulated with the caption “इस छुट्टियों में कश्मीर मत जाओ कश्मीर के युवक टूरिस्ट गाड़ियों पर पत्थर बरसाते हुए” (This vacation don’t go to Kashmir. Kashmiri youth pelting stones at tourists’ cars – translated).
On verification by the Alt News, it was found that it was originally a video of an incident that had occurred at Birsstrasse in Basel, Switzerland on May 19, 2018, after supporters of the Basel and Lucerne football clubs clashed with each other.
The video was shared on social media with different captions. One version states that the incident had occurred in Birmingham, U.K when members of the Muslim community wanted to ‘eat on the roads’ to break their Ramadan fast and resorted to vandalism. Another claim said that these are kidnappers who are on the loose in Jharkhand, Orissa, and Bihar.
Christian group burning Hindu deities
Again along the lines of inciting communal conflict, a video floating around claims that Christians are insulting the tricolor and burning a Lord Krishna statue.

Members of the newly emerging Christian sect in Mizoram had, in fact, burned a Hindu idol and set ablaze the tricolor, but the incident took place in 2017. Firstpost had reported the incident last year on September 30. “This incident comes to light at a time when the rise of Hindu nationalism has caused a number of incidents of communal violence across India,” the report said.
On a press release on October 2017, the Catholic church had heavily condemned the incident calling it “fundamentalism”. “We are shocked that anyone could show disrespect to members of another religion in the name of Christ,” they said.
British woman confronting Muslim extremists
In the past few days, a video of a white British woman facing Muslim extremists in UK has gone viral in India. In the four-minute video, snarky remarks of a burqa-clad woman asking the British woman “Who are you trying to seduce?” can be heard. Protesters can be heard chanting ‘British Police go to hell’ and ‘UK go to hell’.
Another violence inciting remark comes from preacher Anjem Choudary who tells the woman that “all non-Muslims are destined for hellfire” and that “If it’s not Islamic, then the law of the land and those making it can go to hell.”
On inquiry, it was found that the video is 6 years old and is part of a bigger documentary by the well known British investigative journalist Stacey Dooley about religious extremism in her hometown. The entire documentary can be viewed here.
TN church involved in ‘Tuticorin riots’
A 3-minute long video shows police lathi charging people inside a church and rounding them up in the police van. The caption accompanying the post is “Church was the training centre for preparation of petrol bombs and creating riots. This is one of the church raided by TN police at Tuticorin after the riots. Could this continuous usage of religious place for anti-social activities be allowed. Mainstream media is not covering this.”
