A dramatic fire broke out in a Pune-bound shuttle Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train near Yevat station, Maharashtra, on Monday morning. The blaze started inside the train’s toilet, allegedly when a lit bidi was discarded into the dustbin.

A passenger was trapped when the toilet door jammed, but quick-thinking travellers smashed open the door and rescued him in a tense, life-saving moment. Railway authorities swiftly responded, extinguishing the fire with no injuries reported. A 55-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh was detained for questioning as investigations continue.

Heroic Passenger Rescue Amid Train Fire Panic

As smoke began to pour out of the train toilet, panic erupted among the few passengers present. The situation turned critical when a man became trapped inside the burning lavatory, the door locked from the inside. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and concern, but within moments, a group of alert passengers took action.

The quick response from fellow passengers and railway staff ensured that the fire was contained before it could spread, highlighting the importance of community awareness and passenger safety on Indian railways.

Railway Authorities and Ongoing Investigations

According to railway officials, the fire was detected around 7:05 am, and initial reports suggest it may have been caused by a short circuit in the train’s toilet. However, some officials are also considering the possibility that a lit bidi thrown into the dustbin ignited paper and trash. The detained passenger is being questioned, and a detailed probe is underway to determine the exact cause and prevent similar train fire incidents in the future.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we are heartened by the courage and quick thinking shown by ordinary passengers who became heroes in a moment of crisis. This incident is a stark reminder of the need for enhanced Pune railway safety measures and greater public awareness about the dangers of negligence on public transport.

We urge Indian railways and passengers alike to prioritise safety, maintain vigilance, and foster a culture of empathy and cooperation.
