Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder: In a tragic case that initially appeared to be a heart breaking accident, Meghalaya Police have revealed that the murder of 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon was a premeditated act involving multiple backup plans.

The incident occurred on May 23 near Weisawdong Falls in Cherrapunji. Raja was on his honeymoon with his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, who has been found to be involved in the conspiracy to kill him. According to police investigations, Sonam conspired with her boyfriend, 20-year-old Raj Kushwaha, and his accomplices to carry out the murder.

Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Conspiracy

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem stated that Raj Kushwaha orchestrated the entire plot months before the wedding, making him the key figure behind the crime. The plan, which began in February, aimed to eliminate Raja Raghuvanshi, a transporter from Indore.

Initial attempts included staging Sonam’s disappearance by faking a drowning or killing an unidentified woman and burning the body to pass it off as Sonam’s, but these plans did not succeed. Raj’s three accomplices arrived in Guwahati before the couple and followed them to Meghalaya, procuring a machete used in the attack.

On May 23, Raja was brutally attacked near Wahkdait in Nongriat village while Sonam reportedly watched. The body was disposed of in a gorge. Sonam subsequently fled, changing disguises and moving through various cities before being apprehended by police.

Operation Honeymoon: The Investigation

Raja and Sonam married on May 11 and went missing during their honeymoon on May 23. The Meghalaya Police launched “Operation Honeymoon,” involving over 120 officers who tracked suspects using CCTV footage and mobile phone data.

Sonam’s brother, Govind, publicly condemned her involvement, apologizing to Raja’s family and severing ties with her. Police have revealed that Raj Kushwaha paid Rs 50,000 to the accomplices to carry out the murder, covering their travel and lodging expenses. All accused have confessed to their roles, with Sonam breaking down during interrogation.

The Meghalaya government has recognized the efforts of the search and rescue teams with cash awards and certificates, highlighting the seriousness with which the case was handled.

Calls for Narco Analysis Tests

Sachin Raghuvanshi, Raja’s brother, has urged authorities to conduct narco analysis tests on Sonam and Raj Kushwaha, who remain in police custody along with three other accused. He suspects that the two may be colluding to mislead the investigation and believes additional individuals may be involved in the conspiracy.
