Israel Launches ‘Operation Rising Lion’: Strikes Hit Iran’s Nuclear Sites Near Tehran; Emergency Declared

Israel’s overnight airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites near Tehran mark a dangerous escalation, raising global alarm.

In a dramatic escalation of Middle East tensions, the Israeli Air Force launched a series of airstrikes inside Iran early Friday, June 13, 2025, targeting key nuclear and military facilities near Tehran. Explosions were reported northeast of the Iranian capital, with Iranian state media confirming casualties and damage.

Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency, warning of imminent missile and drone retaliation from Iran. Two US officials confirmed to Reuters that Israel acted independently, with no American involvement. The international community has expressed deep concern, urging restraint amid fears of a wider regional conflict.

Operation Rising Lion: Israel’s Preemptive Strike and Iran’s Response

Around 3 a.m. local time, residents in Tehran and surrounding areas were jolted awake by a series of powerful explosions. Iranian state-run Nour News confirmed the strikes targeted multiple nuclear sites and military installations northeast of the city, causing significant damage and casualties, including reports of injuries to civilians.

The Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, announced a “special state of emergency” across Israel, citing the operation as essential to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the offensive, codenamed “Operation Rising Lion,” as a decisive step to neutralise what he called Iran’s existential threat.

Iran responded by closing its airspace and warning of “severe retaliation,” with Revolutionary Guards vowing to respond “at the right time and place.” Both nations have heightened military readiness, and international airports in Tehran temporarily suspended flights as a precaution.

Background and Global Implications: Rising Nuclear Concerns and Diplomatic Fallout

This strike comes amid mounting international concern over Iran’s nuclear programme. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently reported that Iran has failed to comply with key nuclear safeguards for the first time in over 20 years, raising fears that Tehran is accelerating its weapons-grade uranium enrichment.

Israeli intelligence officials claim Iran now possesses enough enriched uranium for up to 15 nuclear bombs, prompting the preemptive strikes.

The United States, while affirming no involvement in the operation, has reiterated support for Israel’s right to self-defence. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised the importance of protecting US personnel in the region and called for de-escalation. Meanwhile, European and Australian leaders have expressed grave concern, urging all parties to return to diplomatic negotiations to prevent further destabilisation of the already volatile Middle East.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The recent Israeli airstrikes inside Iran mark a perilous turning point in a conflict that has long threatened regional and global peace. While Israel’s concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions are understandable, the cycle of violence risks devastating consequences for civilians and the wider world.

The Logical Indian advocates for peace, dialogue, and empathy as the only sustainable paths forward. Military action may provide short-term security but often deepens mistrust and suffering.

It is imperative that the international community intensifies efforts to bring both sides back to the negotiating table, fostering trust and coexistence over confrontation. How can global actors better facilitate dialogue to prevent this dangerous spiral of violence?
