Govt Announces Rs 90Lakh Cash Reward For Rio Paralympics Medallists
The Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment on Thursday announced cash rewards worth Rs 90 lakh for Rio Paralympics 2016 medalists to acknowledge the contribution made by paralympic athletes to Indian sports and social upliftment. Indian para-athletes made history by clinching four medals at the Rio Paralympics 2016. It has made India proud. The department has decided to reward cash prize of total Rs90 lakhs to medal winners” said Shri Thawaarchand Gehlot, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, as reported by The Economic Times. Gehlot will honour the medal winners at a special felicitation programme. The rewards are being given under the Awareness Generation and Publicity (AGP) scheme.
“Gold medal winner Shri Mariyappan Thangavelu and Shri Devendra Jhajharia will be facilitated with Rs 30 lakh cash prize, Silver medallists Ms Deepa Malik will be awarded Rs 20 lakh and Shri Varun Singh Bharti will be honoured with Rs 10 lakh for winning bronze medal at the Rio Paralympics 2016,” as per the PIB press release.
As per the release,“Bhati made a leap of 1.86 meters to finish third and won bronze while Mariyappan Thangavelu bagged gold by jumping at the height of 1.89 meters to clinch a gold medal. Deepa Malik bagged Silver in short put. She is also the first woman to win a medal at the Paralympics Games. Devendra Jhajharia clinched Gold in Javelin throw.” India won four medals, two gold, a silver and a bronze. It is also the country’s “best performance in Paralympics history”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also praised the efforts of para-athletes in his monthly radio programme “Mann ki Baat” on 25 September, 2016. In a bid to give increased recognition to their achievements, the Sports Ministry earlier announced that he medallists will be recommended for the Padma awards this year. Country celebrated their victory and a warm welcome was given on their return.
