The aircraft was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew. Emergency services responded immediately, with rescue operations ongoing as authorities work to determine the number of casualties and the cause of the crash.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured full central government support, while Air India and local officials have stated that investigations are underway and further details will be released as they become available.

Panic and Heroism Amidst Disaster

The crash occurred around 1:30 pm, sending shockwaves through the densely populated Meghaninagar neighbourhood. Eyewitnesses recounted a terrifying sequence: a loud bang, followed by the sight of the aircraft descending rapidly and erupting into flames upon impact. Local residents rushed to the scene, attempting to assist before emergency teams arrived.

Ahmedabad police commissioner GS Malik confirmed, “A plane crashed in the Meghaninagar area near the airport. It is not yet clear what type of plane it was.” Fire officer Jayesh Khadia described the scene as chaotic, with first responders battling intense heat and smoke to reach survivors. “Our teams are working tirelessly to control the fire and rescue as many people as possible,” Khadia stated. Hospitals across Ahmedabad have been placed on high alert, and additional ambulances have been dispatched to the site.

Investigation and Official Response Intensify

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a full-scale investigation, with a special team arriving from Delhi to examine the crash site and recover the aircraft’s black box. Air India’s official statement read, “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and assured, “The central government stands with Gujarat in this hour of crisis and will provide all necessary assistance.” Security at Ahmedabad airport has been tightened, and all departing flights have been temporarily suspended. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the crash site to facilitate rescue and investigation efforts.

Aviation Safety and Recent Context

This crash comes amid ongoing concerns about aviation safety in India, following a series of near-miss incidents and technical snags reported in recent months. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, known for its advanced safety features, has generally maintained a strong safety record, making today’s incident particularly shocking.

Aviation experts have pointed to the need for rigorous maintenance and pilot training, especially as air traffic continues to surge post-pandemic. In the wake of the crash, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has called for an immediate review of safety protocols and emergency preparedness at all major airports. Families of passengers have gathered at the airport, anxiously awaiting news, while authorities have set up helplines and counselling services for those affected.
