Gurugram reported four new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, 1 June 2025, bringing the district’s total to 23 during the latest national resurgence. Twelve cases remain active, all with mild symptoms and managed in home isolation. Health officials urge vigilance and prompt testing for flu-like symptoms.

Across India, active cases have exceeded 3,700, with Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi reporting the highest numbers. Experts emphasise that while most cases are mild, continued caution and adherence to public health guidelines are essential.

Statewise Surge: Where India Stands Now

India is experiencing a notable uptick in COVID-19 cases, with 3,758 active cases as of 1 June 2025. The distribution of active cases across major states is as follows:

  • Kerala: 1,400 active cases
  • Maharashtra: 485 active cases
  • Delhi: 436 active cases
  • Gujarat: 320 active cases
  • West Bengal: 287 active cases
  • Karnataka: 238 active cases
  • Tamil Nadu: 199 active cases
  • Uttar Pradesh: 149 active cases
  • Rajasthan: 62 active cases
Other states with notable numbers include Haryana (26), Andhra Pradesh (17), Madhya Pradesh (16), and Punjab (5). Four deaths—one each in Kerala, Karnataka, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh—were reported in the last 24 hours, mostly among elderly patients with comorbidities.

Mild Symptoms, Omicron Subvariants, and Expert Advice

The current surge is driven by Omicron subvariants such as LF.7, XFG, and JN.1, which are highly transmissible but mostly result in mild symptoms like sore throat, mild fever, and cough. Hospitalisation rates remain low.

Expert Advice:
Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, Co-Chairman of the National Indian Medical Association COVID Task Force, advises, “While the current variants are not causing severe illness in most cases, it is crucial for people—especially the elderly and those with underlying health conditions—to remain cautious. Early testing and isolation are key to preventing further spread.”

Dr Nivedita Gupta, Senior Scientist at ICMR, adds, “The best defence continues to be vaccination, good hand hygiene, and wearing masks in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces. People should not let their guard down, as even mild cases can sometimes lead to complications in vulnerable groups.”

Dr Alka Singh, Civil Surgeon of Gurugram, reiterates, “There is no need to panic. All reported cases in the district are mild, and our health infrastructure is prepared. Residents should not ignore any flu-like symptoms and should seek testing promptly.”

Precautionary Measures and Community Response

States have reissued precautionary advisories. Karnataka and West Bengal are monitoring students in schools, while Delhi and Maharashtra have increased testing and contact tracing. Hospitals in Kerala and Tamil Nadu have reviewed readiness for any potential surge in severe cases. The central government advises all states to ensure robust testing and reporting.

Citizens are encouraged to get tested if symptomatic, isolate if positive, and continue following COVID-appropriate behaviour. Vaccination drives are being reinforced, especially for vulnerable groups.
