Neeraj Chopra, India’s celebrated javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medallist, has been conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, the Ministry of Defence announced on 14 May 2025. The appointment, effective from 16 April, was approved by the President of India and recognises Chopra’s extraordinary achievements in athletics as well as his previous service as Subedar Major.
The honour comes at a pivotal moment as Chopra prepares for his upcoming international competitions, and has been widely applauded by defence officials, sports authorities, and fans across the country.
A National Honour for a Sporting Legend
Neeraj Chopra, now 27, has become a household name in India and an international icon after winning gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics, in addition to being crowned world champion in 2023.
The Ministry of Defence’s official statement reads, “The President is pleased to confer Honorary Rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Territorial Army on Ex-Sub Maj Neeraj Chopra, PVSM, Padma Shri, VSM, with effect from 16 April, 2025.”
Major General GS Choudhry, Joint Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, remarked, “This honour is a tribute to Chopra’s relentless pursuit of excellence and his role in inspiring a generation of Indians.” Chopra joins the ranks of other distinguished Indian sports personalities, such as M.S. Dhoni and Kapil Dev, who have previously been awarded honorary military titles for their contributions to the nation.
From Rural Roots to Global Podiums
Chopra’s journey is a story of grit and determination. Born in Khandra village, Haryana, he joined the Indian Army as a Naib Subedar in 2016, where his talent was nurtured by the Army’s sports programme. Over the years, he has been decorated with the Arjuna Award, Khel Ratna, and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal.
After being promoted to Subedar Major in 2024, Chopra was due for retirement this year, making the honorary commission both timely and meaningful. His influence extends beyond the field, as he continues to inspire millions with his humility and dedication.
Chopra is set to compete next at the Doha Diamond League on 16 May, followed by events in Poland and Czechia, where he aims to break the 90-metre barrier in javelin throw-a milestone eagerly anticipated by sports enthusiasts.
Bridging Civilian Excellence and Military Tradition
The Territorial Army, established in 1949, has a tradition of recognising individuals who embody the spirit of national service and excellence. Chopra’s honorary commission is not just a personal milestone but also a symbol of the growing synergy between India’s sporting and defence communities.
Defence officials have emphasised that such honours serve to motivate young Indians to contribute to the nation in diverse ways. The sporting fraternity, too, has lauded the move, with Athletics Federation of India President Adille Sumariwalla stating, “Neeraj’s journey is a beacon of hope and aspiration for the youth of India.
This recognition is richly deserved.” As Chopra continues to inspire on and off the field, his story underscores the importance of nurturing talent and celebrating national pride.

Neeraj Chopra’s elevation to honorary Lieutenant Colonel is a shining example of how dedication, humility, and service can transcend boundaries. His achievements unite the country, reminding us of the immense potential that lies within every Indian, regardless of background.
At The Logical Indian, we believe stories like Chopra’s foster empathy, harmony, and a sense of shared purpose. As we celebrate his latest honour, let us reflect on how we, as a society, can continue to recognise and uplift those who inspire positive change.
