Neeraj Chopra, India’s celebrated javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medallist, has been conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, the Ministry of Defence announced on 14 May 2025. The appointment, effective from 16 April, was approved by the President of India and recognises Chopra’s extraordinary achievements in athletics as well as his previous service as Subedar Major.

The Ministry of Defence’s official statement reads, “The President is pleased to confer Honorary Rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Territorial Army on Ex-Sub Maj Neeraj Chopra, PVSM, Padma Shri, VSM, with effect from 16 April, 2025.”
Major General GS Choudhry, Joint Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, remarked, “This honour is a tribute to Chopra’s relentless pursuit of excellence and his role in inspiring a generation of Indians.” Chopra joins the ranks of other distinguished Indian sports personalities, such as M.S. Dhoni and Kapil Dev, who have previously been awarded honorary military titles for their contributions to the nation.
From Rural Roots to Global Podiums

Born in Khandra village, Haryana, he joined the Indian Army as a Naib Subedar in 2016, where his talent was nurtured by the Army’s sports programme.
