West Bengal suspends internet services in Sainthia to curb rumours and maintain peace after clashes.

Internet services, including voice-over-Internet telephony, have been suspended in five Gram Panchayat areas of Sainthia town in West Bengal’s Birbhum district until March 17. The decision aims to prevent the spread of rumours and potential unlawful activities following a stone-pelting incident and clashes between groups, reportedly linked to Holi celebrations.

The affected areas include Sainthia, Hatora, Mathpalsa, Harisara, Dariyapur, and Fulur Gram Panchayats. While internet services are restricted, traditional voice calls and SMS services remain operational. The order was issued by the Principal Secretary of the Home and Hill Affairs Department, Government of West Bengal, under the Telecommunications Act, 2023.

Suspension Details

The suspension of internet services in Birbhum’s Sainthia region is a preventive measure aimed at maintaining public order and preventing the incitement of offences. According to the official order, “Any data-related message or class of message… shall temporarily not be transmitted in the interest of maintaining public order and preventing incitement to the commission of any offence”.

This decision follows reports of clashes between groups, which some sources attribute to tensions during Holi celebrations. Despite the restrictions, traditional communication methods like voice calls, SMS, and newspapers remain unaffected, ensuring that essential communication channels are not disrupted.

Background and Context

The suspension of internet services in Birbhum is part of a broader strategy to manage public unrest and prevent misinformation. The region has experienced recent disturbances, including clashes during Holi celebrations, prompting the deployment of police forces to ensure safety. The decision reflects a common approach in India where internet shutdowns are used as a tool to control the spread of information during sensitive situations.

This method is often controversial, as it can impact daily life and business operations, but it is seen as necessary by authorities to prevent escalation of tensions. The Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has criticized the move, suggesting it highlights the administration’s inability to manage law and order effectively.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The Logical Indian advocates for peaceful resolution and open dialogue in managing public unrest. While the intention behind the internet shutdown might be to prevent unlawful activities, it also highlights the need for more nuanced approaches to address misinformation and unrest.

In a digital age, internet access is crucial for daily life, and such shutdowns can have unintended consequences. As we reflect on this situation, we must consider whether there are more effective ways to maintain peace without disrupting essential services. What do you think is the most balanced approach to managing public order while preserving digital rights?
