The Sports Ministry lifts WFI suspension, restoring governance and enabling Indian wrestlers to compete globally.

The Sports Ministry of India has officially lifted the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), reinstating its status as a National Sports Federation (NSF). The suspension, imposed in December 2023 due to governance lapses and procedural irregularities, was revoked after the WFI implemented corrective measures, including relocating its office and restructuring operations.

This decision allows the federation to resume domestic activities and oversee selection trials for upcoming international tournaments, such as the Asian Championships. The move comes in response to concerns raised by athletes and directives from the Delhi High Court warning of potential impacts on Indian wrestlers’ participation in global competitions.

A Step Towards Stability

The Sports Ministry’s decision follows significant reforms within the WFI. Key changes include relocating its office from the residence of former president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to East Vinod Nagar, New Delhi, and ensuring transparent governance practices.

The ministry has mandated that WFI roll back amendments made during its suspension period and submit a written assurance within four weeks regarding balanced power distribution among its office bearers. A ministry official stated, “This decision prioritises athletes’ welfare and aims to restore normalcy in Indian wrestling”.

Additionally, the IOA dissolved its ad-hoc committee overseeing WFI operations, transferring full administrative control back to the federation.

Background: Governance Failures and Protests

The suspension stemmed from governance lapses under previous leadership, including violations of the National Sports Code and allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Wrestlers such as Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik led protests against misconduct within WFI, prompting intervention from United World Wrestling (UWW) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

UWW had earlier lifted its ban on WFI in February 2024 but imposed conditions to ensure non-discrimination against protesting wrestlers. The IOA ad-hoc committee conducted selection trials for international events during this period, ensuring participation despite administrative challenges.

Expert Advice: Ensuring Transparency and Athlete Welfare

Experts emphasise that reinstating WFI must be accompanied by robust mechanisms to prevent future governance failures. Former Olympian Yogeshwar Dutt suggested that athlete representation in decision-making processes is crucial for fostering trust.

Additionally, sports management consultant Prem Chand Lochab recommended appointing safeguarding officers to address harassment concerns and ensure adherence to international standards. Transparent selection trials and timely elections for the Athletes’ Commission are vital steps toward achieving fair governance.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The lifting of WFI’s suspension marks a pivotal moment for Indian wrestling, highlighting the importance of accountability in sports administration. It is essential to ensure sustained reforms that prioritise athletes’ welfare while fostering transparency and inclusivity.
