The surge in counterfeit ₹500 notes calls for public awareness and knowledge on currency verification.

The circulation of counterfeit ₹500 notes in India has surged alarmingly, with the Finance Ministry reporting a 317% increase over five years. This rise is linked to the withdrawal of ₹2000 notes, making ₹500 the highest denomination currently in use. Recent reports indicate that fake notes can be identified by a misspelling of “Reserve Bank of India” as “Resarve Bank of India.” Authorities are urging the public to verify currency authenticity through specific features and have launched awareness campaigns to combat this issue.

Escalating Counterfeit Crisis in India

The counterfeit ₹500 note crisis has reached critical levels, prompting urgent action from authorities. The Finance Ministry’s recent data reveals that fake ₹500 notes have increased from 21,865 million pieces in 2018-19 to a staggering 91,110 million pieces by 2022-23, marking a 317% rise. Although there was a slight decline to 85,711 million pieces in 2023-24, the overall trend remains concerning. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary addressed these issues in Parliament, stressing the need for public vigilance against counterfeit currency. “No one would be able to identify that they are not real unless they know detailed features of the currency notes,” he stated.

Recent Incidents and Public Awareness Initiatives

The spike in counterfeit ₹500 notes is particularly pronounced in states like Bihar, where police have issued alerts about the circulation of fake currency. The Bihar Police Headquarters has launched an awareness campaign aimed at educating citizens on how to identify counterfeit notes. One notable error found in these counterfeit notes is the misspelling of “Reserve Bank of India” as “Resarve Bank of India,” which serves as a key identifier for the public. Additionally, counterfeiters have become increasingly sophisticated, producing notes that can easily deceive even vigilant individuals. The campaign includes distributing information on identifying fake currency and utilizing mobile apps designed for this purpose.

In a recent incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district, two men were arrested for printing fake ₹500 notes on ₹10 stamp paper, having circulated approximately ₹30,000 worth of counterfeit currency. They utilized techniques learned from YouTube to produce their forgeries. This highlights how easily accessible information can be exploited for illegal activities and underscores the necessity for public education on recognizing genuine currency.

How to Identify Genuine ₹500 Notes

To combat counterfeiting effectively, officials recommend several steps for verifying the authenticity of ₹500 notes:

  1. Watermark: Hold the note against light to see a clear watermark of Mahatma Gandhi on the right side.
  2. Security Thread: Look for a security thread embedded in the note that changes colour when tilted; it should read “Bharat” and “RBI.”
  3. Microprinting: Examine areas with fine print; genuine currency includes microprinted text that is difficult to replicate.
  4. Intaglio Printing: Feel the raised printing on the note; genuine currency has a distinct texture that can be felt by touch.
  5. Colour Shifting Ink: Observe the numeral ‘500’ on the front; it should change colour from green to blue when viewed at different angles.

Additionally, citizens are encouraged to use various apps available that can assist in identifying counterfeit currency.
