Veer Bal Diwas, observed annually on December 26, is a significant day in India that commemorates the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the young sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. This day serves as a powerful reminder of their unwavering faith and commitment to righteousness, inspiring generations with their legacy.

Historical Context

The roots of Veer Bal Diwas lie in a tragic yet heroic chapter of Sikh history. In December 1704, during a siege at Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji and his family faced immense persecution from the Mughal Empire. Amidst the chaos, his two younger sons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, were captured by Wazir Khan, the Mughal governor of Sirhind. Despite being offered safety and wealth in exchange for their conversion to Islam, the young boys resolutely refused to abandon their faith. This act of defiance ultimately led to their martyrdom on December 26, 1705, when they were bricked alive for their steadfastness.

Significance of Veer Bal Diwas

The observance of Veer Bal Diwas was officially declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2022, marking a historic moment as it is the first national day dedicated to honouring children’s sacrifices in India. The day not only commemorates the bravery of the Sahibzadas but also aims to inspire future generations by promoting values such as courage, integrity, and moral fortitude. It serves as a reminder that true strength lies in standing firm for one’s beliefs, regardless of the circumstances.

Celebrations and Observances

On December 26, 2024, various events are planned across India to celebrate Veer Bal Diwas. Prime Minister Modi will attend celebrations in New Delhi where he will launch initiatives aimed at improving child nutrition and community participation through programs like the Suposhit Gram Panchayat Abhiyan. This initiative focuses on enhancing nutritional outcomes and overall well-being by strengthening local governance systems within villages. Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar will be awarded to 17 children from different states for their exceptional achievements in various fields such as bravery and innovation.

Schools and communities will engage in activities that highlight the stories of the Sahibzadas, ensuring that their legacy continues to inspire young minds. Educational programs will focus on teaching children about the importance of standing firm in one’s beliefs and recognising acts of valor in everyday life.
