The Allahabad High Court has granted anticipatory bail to Sushil Singhania, uncle of Nikita Singhania, who is currently in judicial custody for allegedly abetting the suicide of her estranged husband, Atul Subhash. Subhash died on December 9, 2024, leaving behind a detailed note and video accusing his wife and her family of harassment. The case has sparked significant public outrage and raised concerns about mental health and legal protections in domestic situations.

Arrests Follow Tragic Death

Nikita Singhania was arrested on December 14, 2024, in Gurugram after police tracked her down following a distressing phone call she made to a relative. Her mother, Nisha, and brother, Anurag, were apprehended shortly thereafter in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The police acted after Atul Subhash was found dead in his apartment on December 9, having left behind a 24-page suicide note and an 80-minute video detailing the alleged harassment he faced from his wife and her family. The note outlined demands for money from Nikita that Subhash claimed contributed to his emotional distress during a contentious divorce and custody battle over their four-year-old son.

Public Outcry and Family Demands

The circumstances surrounding Atul’s death have sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for stricter legal protections for men facing domestic abuse. His father has publicly demanded justice, stating that he will not immerse his son’s ashes until those responsible are held accountable. He described his son as having been “broken from the inside” due to the alleged harassment and financial demands made by Nikita and her family. The family has reached out to government officials seeking intervention in the case.

Legal Proceedings and Bail Updates

On December 16, the Allahabad High Court granted anticipatory bail to Sushil Singhania until January 2, 2025. His counsel questioned the authenticity of Atul’s suicide note and highlighted inconsistencies in the investigation process, particularly regarding a family court judge mentioned in the note who had not been questioned by authorities. The court’s decision has been met with mixed reactions as it underscores the complexities of the case amid ongoing investigations into the circumstances leading to Subhash’s tragic decision.
