A donor heart was airlifted from Nagpur to Delhi, saving the life of a 59-year-old woman suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy. The operation began at Kingsway Hospital at 12:53 AM on December 9, with the heart arriving in Delhi at 3:19 AM. The organ was donated by the family of a 43-year-old who died from a brain stroke, with allocation managed by NOTTO. Surgeons at Fortis Escorts performed the transplant, and the recipient is recovering well after waiting over ten years for a suitable donor.

Efficient Transport Through Green Corridors

The heart’s journey covered over 1,067 km in just 3 hours and 4 minutes, facilitated by two green corridors that ensured rapid transit to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. Dr. Ritwick Raj Bhuyan, leading the surgical team, highlighted the importance of timely intervention in such cases. “This transplant was a lifesaving intervention for the patient suffering from end-stage heart failure,” he stated, expressing gratitude to the donor’s family for their selfless act.

Background on Organ Donation in Nagpur

This heart donation marks a significant milestone for Nagpur’s Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC), being the first of 2024 and the ninth heart donation from the region since retrievals began in 2017. The donor, Darpan Surendra Bardia, was a diamond merchant who suffered a brain hemorrhage.

His family’s decision to donate his organs has been praised as an act of immense courage during a tragic time. Dr. Sanjay Kolte from ZTCC emphasized the logistical challenges faced in previous donations and commended this successful collaboration.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This inspiring story underscores the profound impact of organ donation and the collective efforts required to facilitate such life-saving procedures. It serves as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness about organ donation and encouraging individuals to consider this noble act.

How can we further promote organ donation awareness in our communities to ensure more lives can be saved?
