Following the tragic suicide of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash on December 9, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking reforms to domestic violence and dowry laws. Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who filed the PIL, argues that these laws are often allegedly misused, leading to harassment of innocent husbands and their families. The petition calls for implementing previous Supreme Court observations regarding Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code and establishing an expert committee to review existing laws. The case has ignited significant public discourse on the need for legal reforms to protect against false allegations.

Police Action and Search for Accused

In the wake of Atul Subhash’s tragic death, Bengaluru police have taken significant steps to locate Nikita Singhania and her family members, who are allegedly accused of harassment. A four-member police team has been dispatched to Uttar Pradesh to question them following an FIR filed by Subhash’s brother, which alleges that they abetted his suicide through harassment and extortion.

The FIR details demands for ₹3 crore to withdraw legal cases against Subhash and ₹30 lakh for visitation rights to see their son. Videos circulating on social media reportedly show Nikita and her brother leaving their home late at night on a motorcycle, raising concerns about their whereabouts as police seek to bring them in for questioning.

Details from the Suicide Note

Atul Subhash’s suicide note has become central to the investigation, outlining years of emotional turmoil allegedly caused by his wife and her family. He claimed that they filed multiple false cases against him, including accusations of dowry harassment, which he alleged were part of a broader pattern of abuse. His father revealed that Atul had been “broken from inside” due to these ongoing legal battles and financial pressures, including a court order mandating him to pay ₹40,000 in monthly alimony for their child. The note also allegedly implicated a family court judge in Uttar Pradesh, claiming corruption in handling his case.

Public Outcry and Demand for Justice

The case has sparked significant public outrage, with many calling for justice for Atul Subhash and demanding accountability from those allegedly involved in his distress. Vigils have been held in Bengaluru as community members express their grief and anger over the circumstances surrounding his death. Advocates are urging legal reforms to prevent the alleged misuse of domestic violence laws while ensuring that genuine victims receive protection. Subhash’s lawyer emphasized the need for thorough investigations into the allegations made in the suicide note.
