At just 17 years old, Niharika Nair from Bengaluru is making a remarkable impact through her initiative, Project Tribali, aimed at empowering tribal communities in Karnataka and Kerala. Since its inception in November 2020, Tribali has focused on securing basic rights, promoting sustainable practices, and enhancing the quality of life for over 10,000 individuals. Niharika’s innovative approach combines advocacy with practical solutions like solar power to drive change.

Who is Niharika Nair?

Niharika Nair is a Grade 12 student at Ekya Schools in Bengaluru and the founder of Project Tribali. Her journey began in Grade 8 when she became aware of the challenges faced by tribal communities. Her advocacy work has gained significant recognition, culminating in her recent presentation at the 7th 1M1B Activate Impact Summit at the United Nations on November 30, 2023. As a youth advisor for the 1M1B (1 Million for 1 Billion) organisation, she is dedicated to fostering youth-led initiatives that create real-world impact.

What is Project Tribali?

Project Tribali focuses on three core areas: securing fundamental rights, generating income through sustainable practices, and preserving cultural heritage. Niharika’s efforts have already led to significant changes in the lives of tribal families, providing them with access to essential services and resources.

Key Achievements

1. Secured Aadhar Cards: Niharika has successfully registered 1,200 tribal individuals for Aadhar cards, enabling them to access vital government schemes.

2. Fundraising Initiatives: She raised approximately Rs 40,000 to support families in need during challenging times.

3. Health Camps: Organising health camps has been a crucial part of her initiative, addressing malnutrition and health issues prevalent in tribal communities.

4. Sustainable Cooking Solutions: To combat malnutrition, Niharika has donated solar cookers to tribal hamlets, allowing families to prepare nutritious meals while utilising renewable energy.

5. Cultural Preservation and Income Generation: By training tribal artisans in crafting artefacts, she has facilitated sales worth Rs 10,000 in Bengaluru, helping sustain local livelihoods.

Where is Tribali Making an Impact?

Niharika’s work primarily targets tribal hamlets across Karnataka and Kerala, where many communities face systemic challenges such as poverty and lack of access to education and healthcare. Her initiative aims to bridge these gaps by providing resources and creating awareness about their rights.

Why is This Work Important?

Niharika highlights the ongoing human rights violations faced by tribal communities, including evictions due to land encroachments and inadequate access to basic services. Many individuals experience multiple daily violations of their rights. By addressing these issues through advocacy and practical solutions like solar power cooking, Niharika aims to foster dignity and empowerment within these communities.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite her successes, Niharika faces numerous challenges:

1. Corruption and Slow Development: Although state governments allocate funds for tribal development, corruption often hinders progress.

2. Lack of Motivation Among Youth: Many tribal students have access to education but lack motivation. Niharika believes integrating traditional skills with modern educational practices can inspire these children.

Global Recognition

Niharika’s recent presentation at the UN allowed her to connect with a global audience and gain insights into youth-led initiatives that create real-world impact. This recognition underscores the growing importance of her work on an international scale.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Niharika aims to enhance awareness about tribal cultures through various initiatives. She plans to organise events showcasing the talents of marginalised communities and is working towards creating a virtual simulation that allows people to experience different tribal traditions firsthand.

Conclusion

Niharika Nair’s work with Project Tribali exemplifies how young changemakers can drive meaningful social change through advocacy and practical solutions like solar power. Her dedication to securing rights, promoting health initiatives, and preserving cultural heritage serves as an inspiration for others committed to making a difference. As she continues to expand her initiatives and gain recognition on global platforms, Niharika remains a beacon of hope for many tribal communities in India.
