In the ongoing investigation of AgustaWestland VVIP choppers scam, which is considered as one of the major scams encompassing Indian armed forces, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken action against the people whose names have come up over the course of time. The investigative agency on April 15 rebuffed the bail plea proposed by Sushen Mohan Gupta, an alleged defence agent arrested in the AgustaWestland case, reported Live Mint.

The ED is fearing that Gupta might flee away from the country if he is granted bail. The agency strongly opposed his bail plea. Referring to others who have fled the country, ED said that he might take resort in another country just like the 36 businessmen who had criminal cases against them.

ED fears Mohan will escape from India

The investigative agency informed special judge Arvind Kumar that 36 businessmen including the likes of Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya have escaped.

What is surprising is the fact that who are the other 34 fugitives whom the ED is hunting for? With the election battle going on, it would be interesting to see if the investigative agency releases a list of these absconding businessmen.

Gupta cries trustworthiness

D P Singh and N K Matta, the agency’s special public prosecutors countered Gupta’s claim that he had deep roots in the society. Citing the example of Lalit Modi, Mehul Choksi and Sandesara brothers (Sterling Biotech Ltd promoters), the prosecutors said that they had deeper routes in the society but still they left the country.

ED’s advocate Samvedna Verma stressed on the fact that the investigation is at a crucial stage and the body is working to crack the meaning of “RG” which is mentioned in Sushen’s diaries.

ED also alleged that Gupta indulged in manipulating the witness and tried to destroy crucial evidence in the case. Gupta, on the other hand, pleaded on the ground that the investigation is already completed and that he has always shown up when he was summoned.

As per ED officials, Gupta’s role came to light on the basis of the disclosures made by Rajiv Saxena. Saxena turned approver in the case after being deported from UAE and being arrested by the agency here.
