To cut down electricity expenses and promote a green energy initiative, a pilot project by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government to install solar panels on school terraces has been launched. The govt claims that it has helped schools to reduce the electricity bills to zero from Rs.35,000.

More Than 500 Schools To Be Equipped With Solar Panels

Education Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted that the pilot project of installing solar panels in Delhi school has been succesful and now the target is to expand it to 500 schools. The pilot project was run in 21 schools and now it is being installed in 100 schools.

Today, when the power demand in Delhi is excessively high touching 6,866 megawatts, this initiative by the Delhi Government has been a great success. 

“There are certain direct benefits for schools and the education department. With the reduction of recurring costs, the department’s resources can be diverted elsewhere. The in-house production of electricity can also enable schools to afford certain comforts for students, like ACs in auditoriums, which they would have not considered due to costs. Mostly, it is important for all of Delhi, where we are trying to encourage green electricity,” the Education Minister Manish Sisodia to The Indian Express.

Measures Taken By The Government In The Education Sector

Under the present Aam Aadmi Party-led Government, more than 50 schools have been renovated and 12,748 additional classrooms have got administrative and expenditure approval. Over 300 government schools have also introduced a happiness curriculum and the number of nursery classes has also increased.

The performance of students has also improved with 2.68 percentage points in the government schools for Class X CBSE examination in comparison to last year.

Early this year, in the month of March, North Delhi Municipal Corporation installed grid-connected rooftop solar panels on buildings including schools, hospitals and four zonal offices. This step was taken to generate 1.5MW electricity and save up to Rs 9 Lakh every month.
