Indian Athletes Shine In July, Bag 227 International Medals

Indian athletes bagged 227 medals in international competitions in July making it one of the most achieved month of  2019. The athletes from a total of nine disciplines brought laurels to India as they performed at various events, with Hima Das becoming a first Indian sprinter to win a gold medal at an international track event. Union Sports Minister, Kiren Rijuju, took to Twitter to congratulate all the winners.

 


Running

Indian star sprinter Hima Das claimed her fifth gold in 20 days on July 20 after winning the women’s 400m race in the Nove Mesto nad Metuji Grand Prix hosted by the Czech Republic. The 19-year-old finished the race in a season-best time of 52.09 seconds. Das won her first gold in the month on July 2 by outperforming everyone in the 200m race at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland.

She won her second gold at the Kutno Athletics Meet in Poland on July 7. She completed her hat-trick on July 13 at Kladno Memorial Athletics Meet at Kladno, Czech Republic. She won her fourth gold at Tabor Athletics Meet on July 17.

In the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix, national record holder Muhammad Anas also won gold in 200m race under the men’s category. In 400 m hurdles, M P Jabir won the gold by reaching the finish line in 50.21 seconds.

On July 9, Dutee Chand won a gold medal at the Summer Universiade in Napoli making her the first Indian to win a gold in 100m in a global event. Chand completed the race in 11.32 seconds.



Boxing

In boxing six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom bagged the gold medal at the 23 President’s Cup in Indonesia. She defeated Australia’s April Franks 5-0 to bag the gold medal in a one-sided 51kg category final on July 28.

 

Simranjit Kaur defeated Indonesia’s Asian Games bronze medallist Hasanah Huswatun 5-0 in the final bout. In the men’s event, Neeraj Swami defeated Macado Jr. Ramel of Philippines to grab the gold medal in the men’s 49kg category. The tournament concluded with Indan boxers claiming nine medals.

In the total three international competitions, Indian boxers won a total of 21 medals.


Weightlifting

On July 9, former world champion Mirabai Chanu won gold in the senior weightlifting championship at Commonwealth. She lifted a total of 191 kg (84kg + 107 kg) in the senior women’s 49 kg to grab the gold.

 

At the competition, Indian weightlifter won 35 medals.


Badminton

In Badminton, PV Sindhu finished as the runner up at the Indonesia Open after losing the title clash against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi on July 21.


Shooters

Indian shooters have done exceptionally well at the 2019 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup.  On July 15, Elavenil Valarivan won 10m air rifle competition of the Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. The country stood at the top of the table with ten gold, nine silver, and 5 Bronze taking the tally to 24. Even Indian para shooters won nine medals at Para Shooting World Cup in Osijexk, Croatia.


Wrestling

Indian wrestlers clinched 50 medals across five wrestling events in the month. The junior wrestlers outperformed winning 18 medals at the Asian Junior Championships in Thailand.
