Going beyond duty, a team of police personnel trekked through jungles and crossed rivers to carry an injured Maoist to a hospital in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh on September 1.
Madkam Hidma, who had a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head, is currently undergoing treatment for – gangrene that he contracted after falling into a spike hole, which he allegedly made while laying explosive devices fortnight ago.
Gangrene refers to the death of body tissue due to either a lack of blood flow or a severe bacterial infection.
The Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallav said that after falling in the hole, the Maoist managed to come out and took shelter in a nearby village where he was being treated with herbs.

A team of 35 constables were dispatched to bring the Maoist commander. The team carried Hidma for 12 km through tough terrain on a cot.
“It’s heartening that police personnel even after knowing that he had fallen into the spike trap, which he had laid for security forces, carried him on a cot and admitted him in the district hospital,” Pallava was quoted in The Hindustan Times.
Pallava, who himself is a qualified doctor instructed the team to admit the Maoist to the hospital rather than wasting time on interrogation. “Hidma developed gangrene of leg, and the infection could have been life-threatening,” he added.
Hidma who is a member of Maoists’ Malangir Area Committee, has more than 10 cases registered against his name for attacks on security forces in Sukma and Dantewada districts of Bastar region.
The SP also did not let go off the possibility that Hidma might get recruited in the special forces after he is recovered. “Hidma can be an asset for future Naxal operations, if he surrenders and joins police force,” he added.
Pallava said that first all the Maoists are treated as citizens and if they have committed any crimes, then a court will later try and punish them.
