A 19-year-old tribal woman from Alirajpur district, Madhya Pradesh, was manhandled and trounced by her fellow villagers for allegedly eloping with a Dalit man from a different caste.

The 1-minute video has been making rounds on the social media platforms, where the girl can be seen paraded, disrobed and beaten with a stick.

The assailants are supposedly the relatives of the girl who were dejected by her act.

The girl in the video can be seen crying relentlessly and begging for mercy as the passers-by conveniently ignore and walk past her.

No FIR Filed

The police have started the investigations. However, no complaint has been registered on the same.

According to an NDTV report, Vipul Shrivastava, the Superintendent of Police of Alirajpur, the Police got the video through WhatsApp. Few villagers informed them that this video was shot in Temachi village which comes under Ambua Police Station. However, the Police did not receive any complaint from the victim.

The Police approached the woman and her father after which their statements were recorded. The police are investigating the case.

The Logical Indian Take

As per the National Crime Records Bureau Data 2015, 251 horror killing cases were reported in India that year, an increase of 796% from 2014.

In absence of separate law to prevent such crime, the perpetrators either go unpunished or are let go after serving a minimal sentence.

The data and the aforementioned incident is a chilling reminder of the feudal mindset that we harbour and refuse to let go. Absence of direct provisions to criminalise the act has only aided and abetted the culprits while giving little cover to the vulnerable.
