A class 11 student was thrashed up by three men in a bus after she protested against their lewd comments in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, police told media on September 29.

Rajendra Giri, the Station House Officer (SHO) explaining the incident said that the girl, with her friends, was returning home from school when three miscreants in the bus passed lewd comments on September 28. When the girl objected to the behaviour, she was thrashed by them. The incident took place near Hashimpur village in Ramraj area in Muzaffarnagar.

The investigation is underway to catch the accused, the cops added.

Netizens Express Anger

Soon after the news broke, netizens took to Twitter to express their shock and anger.

The Logical Indian Take

When a schoolgirl is beaten-up for protesting against the obscene language used for her in a bus filled with passengers, it only goes on to highlight the audacity of these men and their blatant disrespect for law and order. It is a testament to the deep-rooted misogyny in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Acts such as these are a manifestation of the present societal order where women cannot even protest when met with injustice. The only long term solution to the problem is to challenge the patriarchal order and strictly enforce the law to set a precedent.
