OYO Faces Backlash As 15-Yr-Old Boy Dies Of Electrocution In Delhi Hotel Room

A 15-year-old boy died after allegedly being electrocuted at an OYO hotel in southeast Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur area on Sunday, October 13. 

According to police, they received information at around 12.30 pm on Sunda that that a persons was found unconscious at OYO Hotel, 60 feet Road, Pul Prahladpur.

The deceased identified as Priyanshu Kumar had come to Delhi from Dehradun to participate in a shooting competition along with five other boys and their Coach, Amar Singh. On the day of the incident, the boy was in the washroom when his roommate heard a shout. As the door was locked from inside, the hotel staff entered the bathroom from the window to find the boy unconscious.

He was quickly rushed to Apollo hospital where he was declared brought dead. After the post-mortem was conducted at AIIMS hospital, it was suspected that the boy died of electrocution. A case was registered on the complaint of the coach, under section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

An officer probing the case told The Indian Express that there was no water supply at the hotel when the geyser was put on. As a result, the geyser got shot. Once water supply resumed, and the boy went to take a bath, there was a surge of electricity, and he was electrocuted moments after the water started flowing.

But recently OYO has been receiving flak for the faulty services at their hotels. While customers are dealing with serious inconveniences, and in some cases, life-threatening hazards, several complaints have surfaced. Many people have called out the senseless hype around OYO and that the company has been painting a rosy image with its overseas expansion and multi-million dollar funding plans. 

The company claims that it is the world’s third-biggest hotel network and that it offers over 8,50,000 rooms across more than 800 cities and nearly 23,000 OYO-branded hotels.

Several people have come out on social media about the inconveniences caused to them due to the hotel chain.
