On several occasions, cops have gone beyond their line of duty to save lives. In one such incident on August 1, a cop from Vadodara saved a 45-day-old girl by carrying her on his head through neck-deep water.

Gujarat is currently facing heavy rains with Vadodra being flood-hit. The State Police is vigorously engaged in rescuing people stuck in various places. After receiving one such call of people stuck at Vishwamitri railway station in Devipura village in Vadodra on Thursday, the police rushed to the spot.

The team of cops were wading through the chest-high gushing waters to reach Devipura. The police tied one end of a rope to a pole held it on the other end. After rescuing nearly 70 people to the safer side Govind Chavda, sub-inspector at Raopura police who was heading the operation noticed a mother with a toddler trapped in a flooded house reported The Times of India.

The water was constantly rising. Chavda gave several warnings to the couple to leave the house. But they were scared for their baby girl due to the speedy water current. Getting a grasp of the worsening situation Chavda moved ahead to reach the couple. “Give me a basket and wrap the baby in a blanket or a cloth,” he asked.

He took the basket, placed some clothes and a bed-sheet in it, and then placed the baby on it. Chavda then held the basket on his head and held the rope with the other hand. He walked through five feet-deep water for 1.5km to take her to a safer place.

The sight to many was reminiscent of Vasudev carrying newborn Krishna in a basket wading through the Yamuna river. “The water current was strong, so I had to ensure that I had held the rope tightly. Fortunately, I managed to cross without any trouble,” Chavda said.

Surprisingly, none of his colleagues knew that a baby was in the basket. Instead, they thought Chavda was carrying some valuables of the stranded people in the basket. The mother was also rescued.

Twitterati Applauds Brave Heart

The sincere efforts of Chavda were showered with p[raises by many on Twitter including the Shamsher Singh, Additional DGP, Gujarat. “Proud of the humanitarian work of this cop in Vadodara. Great courage & dedication. Rescued the baby & family,” he wrote.
