The Supreme Court on Monday, September 30 ordered the Gujarat government to pay Rs 50 Lakh compensation and provide a job to Bilkis Bano in two weeks who was gang-raped during the 2002 Godhra riots in Randhikpur village in Dahod, Gujarat.

The court on April 23 had ordered the Gujarat government to pay compensation. However, it was not given to her. The Gujarat government council had requested the bench on Monday to review the April order.

Taking note of the delay, the Supreme Court today asked the state government to speed up the process and provide the compensation within two weeks.

On March 3, 2002, Bilkis Yakub Rasool, as a 21-year-old, was attacked, gang-raped, and left to die by a mob at Randhikpur village near Ahmedabad during the riots following the Godhra train fire incident. Bilkis, who was five months pregnant, lost 14 of her family members, including four women and four children.
