Meghalaya Woman Doctor Drove Ambulance To Help Pregnant Woman

Going beyond the line of duty, a doctor from West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya drove an ambulance to help one of her patients reach a nearby hospital.

Dr Balnamchi Sangma needed to shift one of her patients, a pregnant woman to a nearby hospital. But when she came to know that both the drivers of ambulance were on leave, she drove the ambulance 36 Km to shift the patient to Maternity and Child Hospital (MCH) in Tura.

Startled by the noble act, passerby came to stand still and captured her on their cell phones while driving. After reaching the maternity care, people were amazed to see a woman driving an ambulance before.

As soon as her image of driving an ambulance went viral on social media, netizens showered praises. Explaining the need for an urgent shift, Sangma said that the patient was going into labour and doctors were clueless about the condition of the infant as the patient had denied sonography test. It was then the doctors decided to shift her to MCH.

“On that very day, employees of 108 services, a state ambulance service, was on strike and our driver was on casual leave”, she told EastMojo. She further said that as the patient’s family was poor, she could not ask them to arrange a vehicle. Without any options left, she had to shift the patient on her one.

“It’s high time that people should come out of their comfort zone and do a little act of kindness towards the society. Even though coming out of that comfort zone may be difficult but trying it won’t be hard,” said Sangma.

The Logical Indian salutes Dr Balnamchi Sangma for her prompt action during a time of emergency. Her deed saved the lives of two people. She has become an example of how one should not detest any form of work. She went beyond her duty to stand by the doctor’s oath of saving life at any cost.  Her action has restored faith in humanity. We would also like to plead the 108 ambulance service in the area to not call for strikes, as a person’s life depends upon ambulances.
