In a shocking incident, a Dalit student of a government school was attacked with a pencil knife by classmate belonging to Thevar caste on October 11, reported The News Minute.
The victim – Saravana Kumar who is a class 9 student in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district was assaulted by his classmate allegedly over a small argument.
What Happened?
According to the report, Saravana and the attacker are the students of Government Boys Higher Secondary School. On Friday, after school, the victim and his friends were waiting for the bus at a bus stand. According to the police, both of them left their school bags at the bus stand and then went to buy some snacks at the nearby shops.
It was then when the attacker – Sanju (name changed) spotted their unattended bags and hid Kumar’s friend bag. The duo, when realised the bag was missing, questioned Sanju.
Irritated with the questioning, Sanju allegedly abused Saravana using his caste name and inflicted a cut across Sarvana’s back.
A passerby spotted Saravana bleeding profusely and rushed him to his home. He was later taken to the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), where he is receiving treatment.
Based on Sarvana’s complaint, the police has registered a case under sections 294(b) (utters any obscene words), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code, and sections 3(1)(r)(s), 3(2)(Va) of the SC/ST Amendment Act – 2015.
The father told The New Indian Express that the incident was unfortunate and the offender should be punished. A teacher anonymously said that the Sanju was regularly in trouble.
The school officials and members of the district Child Welfare Committee met the victim at GRH on Sunday.
