Nilanjana Biswas, 45, is restoring our faith in humanity in her hometown West Bengal’s Kalyani. Selling off her jewellery worth Rs two lakh and taking a loan worth Rs three lakh, she is taking care of 400 stray dogs in her area.

Going against her husband’s wishes, Biswas sold her jewellery and bought a loan to provide treatment and food tor these animals. Roaming around the town on her scooter, Biswas looks after the dogs – she does everything from feeding them to getting them vaccinated.

“I have always loved dogs. I have 13 dogs at home and 12 of them are street dogs. But I realized that I have certain responsibilities towards other dogs in the town too. So I took up the job to look after them myself,” she told The Times of India.

At her home, there is a refrigerator for food storage and also a store for fuel (wood) to prepare food for the dogs. Biswas is also very careful about hygiene. “We first place a few plastic utensils along roads. Then, we pour chicken and rice in the utensils and water in separate ones. We clean the area and the utensils after feeding them,” she explained.

Despite being a diabetic and heart patient, Biswas ensures that she feeds the dogs each day. She has always had her children’s support.

Biswas is seen as an inspiration for many in her area. “She campaigns around the town to spread awareness against any sort of violence or ill-treatment against the street dogs, especially during Diwali and Holi,” said Ajay Dutta, a resident.

She has also implored the city authorities to take some initiative in taking care of these animals and rehabilitating them. “I would be happy if the authorities do something for these street dogs,” Biswas said.

Biswas’ compassionate nature makes us believe in goodness and selflessness. The Logical Indian appreciates her for being an epitome of kindness.
