Indira Gandhi International Airport’s (Delhi) Terminal 3 will be getting the biometric system to allow paperless boarding from 2020 Winter.
According to The Times Of India report, the domestic flights taking off from terminal 3 (T3) will be equipped with a face recognition system as a part of the government’s Digi Yatra Scheme (DY). However, DY is an optional procedure for the ones who wish to ease out their check-ins.
As a part of this procedure, the passengers will need to give their unique DY number at the time of booking their tickets. The biometric data system with the airport will integrate with the airlines’ bookings. The passengers can scan faces and confirm their identity along with the registered airlines that are booked on.
Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) has recently conducted a biometric trial for international flights as well. Once it gets approved, the immigrants can also have paperless boarding experience.
Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) spoke to the Times Of India and said, “We will first expand DY for all of Vistara’s domestic outbound passengers. After that, the facility will be extended to all domestic flights out of T3. We plan to roll it by next winter.”
The passengers can directly walk-up to security, except for those with handbags who need to drop them at the counters. “We will have cameras at pre-embarkation security checkpoints (PESC). When a passenger crosses the yellow line they will show their face at this camera. By the time they reach the frisking point, security personnel will have two pieces of information in front of them digitally, passenger identity and their flight details,” Videh Kumar added.
The DY will have separate e-gates for the passengers who register for it. This will scrape the tedious process of showing the ID cards and boarding passes. Vistara, Air India and AirAsia India have their domestic flights from T3 and SpiceJet and Indigo will have their flights from T2. Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai airports have also been a part of trials conducted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
