The four accused in the gruesome murder of Hyderabad veterinary doctor, Md Pasha, Naveen from Gudigandla, cleaner Kesavulu, and an assistant named Siva have confessed to their crime, say the police.

They had doused the body after raping the doctor and had come back to the spot to ensure that her body was burnt beyond recognition.

According to a report, after setting the body on fire at Chatanpally in Shadnagar between 2 am and 2.30 am, the gang left the crime spot in the truck and on the scooter. However, while Arif and Chennakeshavulu went away, Shiva and Naveen, who were on the scooter, returned to the spot a little later to check if the body was completely burnt.

The brutal murder of the 27-year-old veterinaria on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Wednesday, November 27, has shaken the country. This incident has yet again raised questions on the safety of women in India.

What Happened?

Speaking to The Logical Indian, Cyberabad Commissioner of Police V. C. Sajjanar said: “A little after 8 PM, the woman was returning home on her two-wheeler from a clinic when she noticed a flat tyre. She called her sister to tell her she was afraid as she was stranded in a dark street, and her sister suggested that she leave her vehicle and take a cab home.”

The call recording was analysed and it was found that the doctor told her younger sister that she was scared at suspicious movements of lorry drivers and was uncomfortable at strangers approaching her, offering help to repair her scooter.

She was heard saying on the phone that two people took her scooter and soon returned with it, claiming that the tyre puncture shop was closed.

Before disconnecting the call, she told her sister that she was scared as some people in a lorry were staring at her, and she did not know what to do.

“When the family members tried to contact her, her phone was switched off at around 1 AM, following which they approached Shamshabad Rural police and lodged a complaint,” Sajjanar said.

On November 28, Thursday, the doctor’s charred body was found beneath an under-construction flyover. She was murdered and her body was set ablaze.

Two truck drivers have been taken into custody.

“A medical report is yet to come, but evidence suggests that she was sexually assaulted,” Sajjanar said. “Her innerwear was found some distance away from the body. We suspect that at least two people were involved in the murder, although we are not sure whether they are the same people who approached to help her.”

10 teams have been formed to identify and nab the perpetrators.

“I would request all women to dial 100 and reach the police for help, before they reach out to anyone else. We are always there to help and protect our women, and we will try our best to ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not take place. But people must reach out to us immediately, when they find themselves in danger,” Sajjanar said.

The Logical Indian Take

In 2018, a report ranked India as the most dangerous country for women. Little has been done to ensure women’s safety after the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.

Walking along dark, deserted roads is a nightmare for any woman in the country. Women have to live in constant fear of being attacked, raped and killed.

People are shocked and shaken by this incident and several others like this one, but not much has been done to stop them from happening. Such incidents directly point to the glaring problems in our society, which fails to equate women to men even in the 21st century.

Incidents like these show the patriarchal and misogynistic background of society.

The Logical Indian is perturbed by the incident and urges authorities to take strict action against the perpetrators.
