A man was arrested on Monday for the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Rajasthan’s Tonk district. He has confessed to the crime.

“It was a big challenge for us, considering such a despicable act and then murder had happened with a six-year old. We formed teams and met with the public to collect input and then were able to arrest him. He has confessed to the crime,” senior police officer Adarsh Sidhu told news agency ANI.

“The evidence against him will be prepared soon to ensure that he gets convicted quickly,” he added.

“He was around the school near 12 pm and then lured the girl with toffee and then took her to a nearby desolate area where he raped her. He then murdered her since the girl knew him and he feared getting recognised. Had we not caught him then he would have fled the area as he is a truck driver,” Sidhu said, speaking about the motive.

What Happened?

A six-year-old girl’s body was found in Rajasthan’s Tonk district on Sunday, December 1, allegedly raped and strangled with her own school belt, said police.

The girl had gone to school on Saturday, November 30, but she never returned. Her body was discovered near bushes in a remote area near her Khetadi village. Police said that liquor bottles, snacks and bloodstains were also found at the spot.

On Saturday, November 13, there was a sports competition at the school, following which she went missing. When she did not return home by 3 PM, her family began searching for her. For hours, they searched farms and homes of relatives. On the morning of December 1, her blood-stained body was found some distance away from her school.

After the police found the body, a huge crowd gathered at the spot and protested. Since the village lacked the facility, the girl’s body was taken elsewhere for post mortem. According to Adarsh Sidhu, evidence found during initial investigation points at rape and murder.

“We are investigating the case to trace the accused. We have formed special teams,” NDTV quoted Sidhu as saying.

The incident comes just days after the brutal rape and murder of a Hyderabad veterinarian, which has sent shock waves across the nation.
