A 22-year-old youth from Gaya in Bihar died on Friday, September 28 after he was allegedly thrown out of a moving train by Government Rail Police (GRP) personnel. Reportedly, Venkatesh alias Chunnu’s body was recovered the next day on the railway tracks near Paharpur station by Gaya GRP personnel.
What had happened?
According to The Times Of India, the incident occurred following a tiff between the railway police and the youth over money demanded by the former since Chunnu was travelling without a ticket. The incident took place between Kodarma and Gaya in the in Janshatabdi Express train.
The co-passengers of the train, enraged by the cops’ behaviour entered in a heated argument. The video of the scuffle shows the co-passengers heckling some of the cops for demanding money. In the video, people can be heard saying that for money the police pushed the boy out of a running train. Reportedly, the incident occurred even after the man managed to get a valid ticket from the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE).
The Superintendent denies allegations
The Superintendent of Rail Police (Patna), Ashok Kumar Singh while denying the allegations said that the youth, fearing arrest for consuming liquor on the train, jumped off. He also alleged that the youth was drunk. He added that when the train reached near Paharpur, a few passengers had complained that two youths, who were under the influence of alcohol, started creating nuisance in a coach. It was then that the police escort team tried to catch the youths. While Chunnu jumped off the train, his friend Krishna was arrested. He said that further investigation is on.
A similar incident occurred last week in an EMU train between Holambi Kalan and Badli railway stations in New Delhi when a woman was harassed by a Delhi police constable. Jagran reported that upon complaining about his behaviour, the constable threatened to throw her from the moving train.
What does the youth’s family have to say?
Gaurav, the deceased’s younger brother told News18 that his brother was travelling with a ticket which had not been confirmed and the policemen were demanding money from him. He also claimed that his brother was a humble and sober person who had no history of engaging in fights with anyone. The relatives of the deceased also said that they will file a court case as the Railway Police isn’t cooperating with them.
