Supported by

In an appaling incident which brings immense shame to humanity, four men allegedly brutalised and gang-raped a male dog in Malwani area of Malad West in Mumbai on Sunday, November 17. An animal welfare non-governmental organisation ‘Animals Matter To Me’ (AMTM) which had taken the dog to the veterinarian and cared for the dog, posted on November 21 that dog had succumbed to his injuries on the same day.

What had happened?

The Deccan Chronicle reported that the dog was last seen in the Malwani Church area after which it had gone missing for a day. The dog was found the next day, bleeding heavily and  mutilated genitalia. A woman who lives in the neighbourhood tried to offer food to the dog. She said that when she went to offer food, the dog started yelling and would not let anyone touch him.

An auto driver in the area told the lady that he was alerted by the loud cries of the dog and informed that his front legs were tied and mouth gagged while the canine was being sexually tortured. However, the culprits fled the location once the auto driver arrived.

Reportedly, a case of animal cruelty against four unknown men has been lodged by the Malwani police. While the NGO claims that the canine was sexually tortured.

Canine passed away

Dr Ankita Pathak, founder of AMTM told the daily, “Its private parts are mutilated in such a way that it could not happen unless someone forcibly harmed it. It appears that someone tried to fold its hind legs near the pelvis.” AMTM kept on updating the dog’s status on their Facebook page and even informed that volunteers are on a lookout to nab the culprits, however, no arrests have been made yet.

While efforts were underway to stabilise the condition of the dog, whom AMTM named Courage, he sadly died on Wednesday. His body has been sent for postmortem.

Cases of atrocities against animals

This heinous instance of cruelty against animals is certainly not the first one. Earlier in July, eight men were accused of raping a pregnant goat after which the animal died. The incident had occurred in Haryana. In addition to bestiality, news reports of street dogs either being killed or poisoned on a mass level has become fairly common. Earlier in October, some activists had alleged that 100 street dogs in a Telangana locality had been poisoned by some unknown persons.
