It was a regular day for a 10-year-old girl in Chennai, but the later part of her day turned bitter as a policeman made obscene gestures at her. According to The Times of India, K Vasu, who is the sub-inspector of Madhavaram Milk Colony Police station, flashed at the 10-year-old child while he was on duty in Villivakkam on December 2.
Caught red-handed by local youths
The culprit cop was caught red-handed by a few local youngsters, who bashed him up. Reportedly, such incidents were frequent at the government school as the accused 57-year-old sub-inspector was a regular offender. While passing by the school every day, he was known to allegedly make lewd gestures at the school girls. Most of them were prone to fleeing in panic, but a certain 10-year-old girl had garnered the courage to complain to her parents twice. “But her parents did not take the issue seriously and decided to neglect the matter believing that their daughter could have misunderstood him,” a police officer told The Times of India.
However, on December 2, Vasu flashed at the 10-year-old girl who is a local resident. Luckily, he was caught in the act by a group of six youngsters who chased him down and thrashed him. Vasu got little chance to evade the scene as local residents wasted no time in informing the police control room, surprised to find a uniformed policeman getting beaten up.
Booked under the POCSO Act
A police team promptly arrived and escorted Vasu to the Villivakkam police station. According to The Times of India, the Villivakkam police let Vasu off with a warning which agitated the victim’s parents. Their pressing demands for stringent action was considered and the probe was deemed suitable to be handled by the All Women’s Police Station. Upon investigation, a case was registered under the POCSO Act. Vasu was later detained and remanded under judicial custody until further notice.
The Logical Indian Take
Sexual crimes against young girls is an impending menace in India at present. In fact, this is not the first time a protector of law has himself committed such a crime. While mob justice in the form of violence is not encouraged, it is understandable that such a shocking act from a policeman himself was indeed enraging. The Logical Indian hopes that the victim and her family get due justice and the policeman’s position and status do not serve as a bypass for him to escape punishment.
